Many books have been published on orchids and orchid growing, and
those listed below are just a suggestion of some of the more important
ones.
For general orchid culture and growing information, The American Orchid
Society's handbooks Growing Orchids, Your First Orchid, and Growing
Orchid Under Lights are the most comprehensive and cost-effective
texts.
For information and pictures of species, Alec Pridgeon's Illustrated
Encyclopedia of Orchids is a lovely, accurate, and reasonably-priced
source.
Also of value are Home Orchid Growing, Miniature Orchids, and Orchids
as House Plants by Rebecca Northen, and Mary Noble's books, especially
You Can Grow Orchids.
For information on specialty groups, we especially like Fred Hillerman's
A Culture Manual for Angraecoid Orchid Growers, Carl Withner's series
The Cattleyas and Their Relatives, and William Rhodehamel's A Masdevallia
Cultural Guide.
For information on the taxonomy of the orchid family, Dressler's Phylogeny
and Classification of the Orchid Family is the most up-to-date source.
Some books that deal specifically with a single genus may be helpful,
and many of these are listed in the AOS book list.
Also of interest may be floras of particular countries, Graf's Exotica,
and general books such as the Golden Guide of Orchids and Ortho's
All About Growing Orchids.
Many of these books can be found in your local library, at your orchid
society's meeting, or may be purchased from the AOS Book Department,
or a bookstore near you.
